New foods

Am I the only mom not completely over the moon about my baby starting to eat solids? Seems like it. All I hear is about moms getting excited to start their babies on solids, some as early as 4 months, or even younger! Then all of the sudden it's bragging about the babies getting solids 3 times a day. Ummm, yeah, not ready for it! If we are going to make our goal of a year or more of breastfeeding, I am not going to have her on pureed foods 3x/day at 6 months! I get funny looks and comments from people, including my own mom! Just because I am not doing what the masses are doing doesn't mean that I am doing it wrong!
I am reading a book called baby led weaning and I really like what it has to say. It's about not shoving the pureed foods at the baby, but letting them learn to feed themselves. Dave and I are doing a combination of pureed and BLW. She had pureed sweet potato Sunday and an apple slice yesterday. Now, BLW promotes letting your baby try everything you are eating...not sure I am ready for that either. I think somewhere in the middle is good for us. I was asked the other day (by my own husband), why I must buck everything conventional. I don't think I am, I am just doing what I think feels more natural for me. I don't think I should blindly follow a doctors opinion. Or Gerber's opinion for that matter! Delanah is thriving, she's doing just fine. I feel like I am in the minority with breastfeeding as her main source of nutrition. How sad is it that I get excited when I see another mom breastfeeding? Makes me feel like I'm not alone.
I am trying to introduce a new food about every other day, to see if she's going to have a reaction. I am sure by 7-8 months she will be getting more food...but she's just little right now and I don't see the need to rush anything at the moment.

  1. I am with you! Amy is almost 9 month old, and she is finally getting solid foods 3x a day. And not rice/oatmeal cereal every meal either. Sometimes just finger foods e.g. cheerios.
Most of the time mother knows best. (This coming from the wife of a pediatrician!)
